FAQ's - Board of Health

How do I locate my septic system?
The Board of Health has files on most properties in Mashpee. Many files include septic plans, as-built drawings and plot plans.

How do I obtain Board of Health sign off on my building permit application?
New homes: After a perc test has been performed by your engineer and observed by a Health Agent, your engineer will submit two sets of site/septic plans and a Title V application to the Board of Health for approval. Once it has been approved (variance requests must go before the Board at their weekly meeting) your licensed septic installer must come in and sign the Title V application. After the installer signs the application, a fee of $100.00 must then be received for the septic permit. The permit will then be issued to the installer. Please note: if the property is serviced by a private well, a well permit must be issued and satisfactory water-test results must be received by the Board of Health prior to issuance of the septic permit. Additions/alterations/pools/sheds: Health Agent must be informed of septic/leaching locations and exact nature of project before signing off on building permit application. Other requirements may be necessary.

How do I have my well water tested?
The Board of Health recommends that residents connected to a private well have their water tested annually. To do this, you may pick up a water sample bottle at our office. Residents have two options for having their water tested. Barnstable County Department of Health & the Environment will test water for $25.00. As a courtesy, they pick up water samples on Monday at 2:00 from our office. If you would prefer a private lab to test your water, Envirotech in Sandwich will test your water for $45.00. You must deliver the sample to them directly. Instructions for collecting the samples are available through the Board of Health.

How do I obtain a copy of my septic system inspection report?
The State requires inspectors to submit a copy of the report to the Board of Health in that town unless it's a voluntary inspection without transfer of ownership. Feel free to call us for a copy.

All ponds and public bathing beaches are tested every two weeks throughout the summer months for coliform and e.coli. The freshwater ponds are tested monthly for volatile organic compounds.
