If you've driven by the Steeple Street location lately, you've noticed that the lot has been cleared and the construction fence is in place. A sign is in place, announcing that Bufftree Building Associates of New Bedford are the General Contractors. The construction site is a hard hat area and all access to the site is scheduled through the Project Manager, Rick Pomroy. This is both out of safety considerations and to keep the workflow from being interrupted by drop in visitors.
Demolition started the week of December 15th. The new library is planned as a LEED certified project. The demolition of the old building is affected by that decision as well as using sustainable and energy efficient methods in the construction process. The first step in demolition was the careful removal of the brick facing. All construction debris must be accounted for and tracked before removing it from the site. Some materials will be recycled and others disposed of. The General Contractor is responsible for recording how each type of material was handled and whether it was recycled or disposed of. This makes for a more time consuming demolition process but it follows the documentation procedure necessary to achieve LEED certification.
