April 2010
The day Mashpee has been waiting for has finally arrived. Opening day at the new library is April 16th at noon. The Planning and Construction Committee and the Board of Selectmen held an open house at
10 am on April 2nd to show off the newly completed building. The Library Board of Trustees also held a Sneak Peek of the building on April 13th from 4pm to 7 pm to accomodate those residents who were working an could not visit the open house during the day. Both groups knew there has been much curiosity and interest in the community about what's inside the library walls.
The library has received rave reviews from all who have toured it. The project planning began in 1999 and a state grant was awarded in 2005. Only a portion of grants were funded each year and Mashpee had to wait until late 2007 to reach the top of the waiting list. Once notification had been recieved, the project design had to be finalized. The project went to bid in October 2008 and ground was broken in January 2009. Construction took 13 months and the last 2 months have been spent installing equipment and furnishings.
The citizens of Mashpee eagerly awaited completion of their new library. Townspeople voted 2 debt exclusions to pay for the local portion of the project funding. The library was completed on time and under budget. Mashpee now has a library they can take pride in, and it will last us for generations to come.
June 2010
The library has been open for six weeks. We've had a few glitches to work out including some mechanical issues with the HVAC system. The library closed for a few days because of an odor problem which was related to the system. The contractors are working on correcting things but the situation is much better. The library is reopened and it's business as usual.
